Asian Festival of Children’s Content in Singapore: Bigger, Bolder, and Brighter

And so it begins. While the festival is still a month away, we are already gearing up for the event, anticipating the bigger, bolder, and brighter things that the Asian Festival of Children’s Content here in Singapore has in store for us this 26-29 May, 2012. For the first time, the AFCC is launching a Regional Focus during the conference, a tradition that we hope will continue throughout the coming years. I am very happy to share that the Country of Focus this year is the Philippines. 🙂

To prepare for the event, there are two press conferences that will be held. The first one is happening this week in Manila!

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this one as I have also been asked to be the Guest Speaker for the launching of the Asian Children’s Literature Room at Woodlands Regional Library here in Singapore, scheduled on the exact same date (20 April 2012). Too bad, I won’t be able to attend this one. However, I would be able to attend the Press Conference here in Singapore on 27 April 2012 at The Arts House. If you’re in the area, do come and join us!

It is truly a privilege to have been invited to be the Programme Director for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference (ACWIC) on 28-29 May 2012 along with Dr. Nancy Johnson. Kenneth Quek is also the Programme Director for the Parents Forum on 27 May 2012. Kenneth is also the Regional Advisor for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Singapore chapter. Mr Rama Ramachandran continues to be the indefatigable driving force and energy behind the AFCC.

I have two scheduled presentations during the Conference for the Primary and Preschool Teachers’ Congress scheduled on 26 May 2012:

Picture Books as Portals to Enchantment and Imagination: Choosing Picture Books that Challenge the Mind

and another one on the same date:

Putting the I.T. Back in KidLIT: Using the World Wide Web as a Classroom Resource

Here is AFCC’s Official Trailer which features the very beautiful Corinne Robson from Paper Tigers, the lively Australian author Christopher Cheng (our featured storyteller here in GatheringBooks last month) and the beautiful and talented Pooja Makhijani. Enjoy the trailer!

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. Your presentations sound interesting, Myra. Wish I could just fly over! Thanks for telling about this. I noted the authors!

    • Hi Linda! Oh how I wish that too! It would be great to finally meet. Sadly, I won’t be able to attend the NAGC this year – I can only afford one US trip in a year, and my family and I would be visiting my husband’s family in Vegas sometime June-July. 😦 I’d look forward to hearing about the conference in Denver through you.
