Black History Month 2012

Black History Month 2012

It is now February in our part of the world and we are excited to share that we would like to join the reading community in celebration of Black History Month which is traditionally celebrated in the month of February.

The theme for this year, as can be seen in this lovely poster is: Black Women in American History and Culture. We, at GatheringBooks, will be taking a short break from our bimonthly theme so that we can devote February 20 (Monday) – February 27 (Monday) to posting book reviews related to this theme. We already have a few titles in mind, and we’d be glad to hear any of your other recommendations. There is also a 2012 National African American Read-in as organized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) which you might want to check out here.

Last year, we also joined Black History Month and devoted February 18, 2011 – February 26, 2011 to celebrating books that showcase the African American History. Here are the titles that we have shared last year:

Life doesn’t frighten Me by Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat

How about you? How are you and your school (or your blog) participating in the National Black History Month?

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. Myra — love that you are joining us in this celebration of diversity. I have a few books that I’ll be reviewing during the month ranging from picture book to YA. Will look forward to your selections. – Pat

  2. Myra, we do the Read-In & offer as many good books as examples as possible, but really believe in integrating books by many cultures all the year through, so don’t do anything particular for the month itself. Thanks for listing these-there a some I’m not familiar with.
