It is now February in our part of the world and we are excited to share that we would like to join the reading community in celebration of Black History Month which is traditionally celebrated in the month of February.
The theme for this year, as can be seen in this lovely poster is: Black Women in American History and Culture. We, at GatheringBooks, will be taking a short break from our bimonthly theme so that we can devote February 20 (Monday) – February 27 (Monday) to posting book reviews related to this theme. We already have a few titles in mind, and we’d be glad to hear any of your other recommendations. There is also a 2012 National African American Read-in as organized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) which you might want to check out here.
Last year, we also joined Black History Month and devoted February 18, 2011 – February 26, 2011 to celebrating books that showcase the African American History. Here are the titles that we have shared last year:
Life doesn’t frighten Me by Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat
Coretta Scott: A Picture Book Featuring the Poetry of Ntozake Shange and Oil Paintings of Kadir Nelson – review by Fats
Of Vanishing Villages and Round and Square Houses: A 2-in-1 Ann Grifalconi Special
Ragtime Love, Silent Movies, and A Grampa Tale: The Piano Man by Debbi Chocolate and Eric Velasquez
The Life of An Artist, Poet, Slave: Dave the Potter by Laban Carrick Hill and Bryan Collier
A Tale Within a Tale: White Socks Only by Evelyn Coleman – review by Fats
The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 – review done by Iphigene
Myra — love that you are joining us in this celebration of diversity. I have a few books that I’ll be reviewing during the month ranging from picture book to YA. Will look forward to your selections. – Pat

Myra, we do the Read-In & offer as many good books as examples as possible, but really believe in integrating books by many cultures all the year through, so don’t do anything particular for the month itself. Thanks for listing these-there a some I’m not familiar with.
