Nonfiction Monday: Liberty Lee’s Tail of Independence (Book Tour)

In celebration of Fourth of July, Gathering Books shares with you Liberty Lee’s Tail of Independence. We are happy and grateful to be a part of Liberty Lee’s book tour. We would like to thank Trish Collins and Jordan Jobe from TLC Book Tours for providing us a free copy of the book. A Tail Like No Other

Written by author/illustrator tandem Peter W. Barnes and Cheryl Shaw Barnes, Liberty Lee’s Tail of Independence tells the story of how America won her independence. The story was told in verse form through the voice of a Yankee Doodle mouse named Liberty Lee.

The rhyming verses in the book make it a delightful read, especially for the young readers. It was also a nice way to present historical facts without dragging the story. I don’t know much about American history but thanks to this book I learned about the events that led to America’s independence.

I particularly enjoyed reading about America’s history through the reminiscences of Liberty Lee and his mouse ancestors. One other thing that I liked about this book is that it not only teaches children a thing or two about America’s history but it is also an interactive read for the little ones. In the dedication page, there is an instruction at the bottom asking readers to find the eagle hidden in each illustration. I thought it was a pretty clever way for readers to fully appreciate the illustrations in the book.

Beyond the Tail

At the end of the book, parents and teachers are provided with detailed descriptions of the events mentioned by Liberty Lee in the story. These will aid children in their understanding of that moment in American history. The inclusion of these resources make Liberty Lee’s Tail of Independence more than your average picture book. It’s not often that I see a detailed resource page in a picture book.

Liberty Lee’s Tail of Independence is as cute as its adorable narrator. The word usage, rhyming verses, and beautiful illustrations in the book will keep the young ones interested in the story. It’s a charming yet educational read for children that parents and teachers might want to look into.
