And so does Neil Gaiman! Hehe. It’s Friday once again, and I’ll steal another week of Poetry Friday, featuring one of Gathering Books’ favorite writers. The Poetry Friday round-up is hosted today by the talented Laura Purdie Salas from Writing the World for Kids. I chanced upon this poem by accident. A fan named Burton Olivier requested a poem from Neil Gaiman which Burton would then have tattooed on his back. Blogger Kitty Cat shares a little bit of the story in her post here. I wish Neil Gaiman would write a poem for me too! Hope you enjoy the poem. Happy Friday! =)
I Will Write in Words of Fire
by Neil Gaiman
I will write in words of fire
I will write them on your skin.
I will write about desire.
Write beginnings, write of sin.
You’re the book I love the best,
your skin only holds the truth,
you will be a palimpsest
lines of age rewriting youth.
You will not burn upon the pyre.
Or be buried on the shelf.
You’re my letter to desire:
And you’ll never read yourself.
I will trace each word and comma
As the final dusk descends.
You’re my tale of dreams and drama,
Let us find out how it ends.
This is the actual image tattooed on Burton Olivier’s back, minus the color:
