In My Mailbox (44): More Library Love and Girl Power Themed Books

It is Sunday once again! One of our favorite days of the week as we share with over 400 fellow bibliophiles the books that we have borrowed, bought, given to us over the past week or so in The Story Siren’s In My Mailbox – a way for us to document all the books that manage to fly into our laps. Some of the books that I am sharing this week are in keeping with our Girl Power and Women’s Wiles theme until the first week of May.

Girl Power Themed Books

It was such a joy to find Lives of Extraordinary Women: Rulers, Rebels (and what the Neighbors thought) by Kathleen Krull and illustrations by Kathryn Hewitt. Perfect for Nonfiction Monday. Sam, Bangs & Moonshine by Evaline Ness is a book that I really searched for in our libraries – as I read a lot of journal articles on Caldecott Medal books and award-winning children’s literature. I am glad we own a copy of this 1960s book.

Millicent Min: Girl Genius by Lisa Yee is a multi-award-winning book that has caught my eye for quite awhile now, so I am glad that it is in our NIE library. Given that my field is in gifted and talented education, this book, I feel would resonate with me deeply. The Star Fisher by Laurence Yep also caught my eye and might even fit our May/June bimonthly theme on A Festival of Asian Literature and the Immigrant Experience. I am a tad realistic in the sense that I know I won’t be able to read all these lovelies for our present theme, thus we can leave room for the next month (or the next).

The Good Neighbors: Book One, Kin by Holly Black and Ted Naifeh is a graphic novel that my daughter has finished in three hours’ time. Apparently this is part of a series. We would most likely borrowing Books 2 and 3 in a few weeks’ time. Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata is a Newbery medalist. Perfect for our very own Award-Winning-Books Reading Challenge (do sign up here if you haven’t joined us yet).

I found another Cynthia Kadohata title which I feel would be perfect for our theme: Outside Beauty. I was sad to have only discovered Mary Downing Hahn recently (her books would have been perfect for our paranormal theme last January/February): Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story.

I have just finished reading this beautiful book Becoming Billie Holiday, a biography written in verse by Carole Boston Weatherford and artwork by Floyd Cooper. I am hoping to review it for Nonfiction Monday.

Academic Books: Conference Fever

There are two major international children’s lit conferences that I am preparing for: the Asian Festival of Children’s Content here in Singapore end of May and a Children’s Literature Association, 39th Annual Conference in Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts this June. Here are some of the books I borrowed from the library to help me prepare for these exciting adventures: The Pleasures of Children’s Literature by Perry Nodelman and Mavis Reimer, and Exploring Culturally Diverse Literature for Children and Adolescents: learning to Listen in New Ways by Darwin L. Henderson and Jill P. May.

Finally, I have A bridge of Children’s Books: The Inspiring Autobiography of a Remarkable Woman by Jella Lepman and the classic Books, Children, and Men by Paul Hazard. I do have my reading cut out for me.
